Our beautiful, serene Memorial Park is located at 3901 N. Vermilion St. in Danville, IL. Opening in 1932, Sunset Memorial Park was East Central Illinois’ first cemetery in the memorial park style. Bronze headstones lay flat on the ground, providing the look and feel of a park for visitors while allowing for ease of maintenance during the mowing season.
The Darby family purchased Sunset Memorial Park in the fall of 1960 from the Van Camp family. Since 1960, there have been many renovations and improvements, including the addition of new areas to accommodate the preference for upright granite headstones.
Popular Features
Our Memorial Park is best known for its swan lagoon and our two swans, Joe and Nellie. Each spring, around Mother’s Day, our lagoon comes to life as a new group of cygnets (baby swans) hatch. The area surrounding our swan lagoon is a masterpiece of floral beauty.
Part of the Community
The gazebo at Sunset Memorial Park is a photographic staple in the Danville area. Each year, high school students take prom and homecoming pictures here, capturing the color and beauty of our grounds.
We also host annual Arbor Day events for children to visit the cemetery and to help plant trees, and our annual pumpkin decorating day is an event many local children look forward to. Also, be sure to watch for notices about the ice cream socials we host each summer. These events bring the community together for an afternoon of fun, entertainment, and complimentary Custard Cup ice cream!
